So today I did the bmw ultimate driving experience in Washington, D.C. At fedex field. I found out about this event a few months back and selected to be notified by email when sign up for my area went live. I suggest doing this as they fill up fast. You can choose to autocross either an x4 or a 428i gc/328d sedan. When you get there you register at a tent then walk around for 30 min before the class begins.
This beautiful m4 was jalop edition. 6 speed manual cloth seats and no sunroof. Quite a strange combo to see. I felt the shifter was strange but I haven’t driven a new bmw in quite some time. Also the seats didn’t have the signature bmw sport seat thigh pullout which I love and thought that was weird
Ok so no one will ever need to do this in their x5 but gets credit where credit is due for being able to tackle this with their admittedly soft suv’s. After I walked around I went in to the lounge where they had snacks drinks and plenty of cars to ogle
This art piece was fantastic and so subtle no one seemed to notice what it was. Would be great in a museum or collection. Also the e21 batmobile is awesome! After I chilled out you get a bit of in class instruction
We learned about grip balance etc. after the class was over we went to the track where we did 2 laps in the 428i then 2 laps in the 328d and then finally a timed 2 lap in either the 4 or 3. The instructors were so cool old racing veterans who knew what they were talking about and knew how to push the cars. All cars were auto and they didn’t let you shift or take off tc. The first two double laps you have the car full with 4 people but times lap is just you and driver. The cars felt luxurious but honestly felt noticeably slower than my focus st. I will attribute this to the aforementioned no holding gear and tc on and at least 200 lbs extra for instructor plus the cars themselves weigh a bit more than the focus. Still fun and they were rwd so you can drift them a bit. The course itself was on the easier side compared to the 2 autox events I’ve done but it’s for beginners so I get that. Felt like a mini I kart course straightforward loop paintEd edges no slaloms either. All in all a great FREE way to spend a Saturday and I recommend it to anyone who lives near where they are hosting the event
After the track you were free to drive any car for an on road test drive and they had an arsenal of 20 different models

Next do the one in SC where they have you on a small circuit course. That’s a lot of fun.

Did the teen driving program last year, it was fun and it did help me learn a few techniques for safe driving. Wish I was 21 though, I’d love to do the autocross and street drives.
